Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual World in a sense allows the user to escape from reality and enter a whole new world through the eyes of their avatar. Nearly anything is possible, such as riding a roller coaster, flying through the air, and even battling zombies! These worlds are meant for virtual human interaction where in other cases cannot be possible.

The first pro of virtual world is depicted in the article, "iReport: 'Naughty Auties' battle autism with virtual interaction" where David Savill explains how virtual world can benefit people with autism. Engaging in this virtual reality allows users to practice their social interaction skills with virtual people, which can help build up their confidence levels to utilize what they learned and apply it to the real world to communicate with real people. Another pro of virtual world is that it can be used in the business industry. In the article "Going to the virtual office in Second Life," the virtual community Second Life wants to create a tool that allows businesses to have virtual meetings simply from their own computer. This greatly benefits global companies because rather than taking a flight to China, for example, you can simply connect with them in the virtual world. This is an efficient way to save time and money.

However, although virtual world provides many benefits there are also cons. One con is that virtual world is just different from the real world. There is no human to human interaction and if people focus all their attention on virtual reality, they may disregard actually communicating with people. Training in the VR environment is also not real so people who may excel here and try to apply their skills to the real world may not perform well. Another huge con is that virtual gaming is very expensive and not everyone can afford it.

Virtual worlds foster creativity in that for gaming, users can create their own avatar that is unique. Virtual world is where people express and share their ideas; there are no wrong ones!

I think in the future, the virtual world would be much more advanced and prevalent in society (particularly in the travel industry). We can view different countries not just through google images and viewing the scenery, but actually experiencing it through the virtual world.
