Social media has been on the rise such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. and there are many ways these technologies can be used. First, they can be used as a means of social networking and communicating with one another. According to the article "Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network's Plan to Dominate the Internet- and Keep Google Out," more than 200 million people (nearly a fifth of all internet users) have Facebook accounts. This is an extremely big number and it goes to show how we can easily connect with old classmates through mutual friends. The benefit of this to society is that this could potentially rekindle old relationships or it simply makes us feel less lonely. when we are on social media. However the dark side to this is illustrated in the article "Leaving 'Fingerprints': How Online Social Networks are Redefining Privacy and Personal Security." Lance Hoffman, a computer science professor stated that by giving our name, birthday, and list of friends, we are unintentionally revealing more than we know. Outside parties can can potentially take that data and combine it with data from other sources to to generate enough information in order to steal someone's identity. Nowadays, many people on Facebook share much more than just their name and birthday. They include pictures of themselves, their families, and may even post what location they are currently in which is very dangerous.

Another way these technologies can be used can be found in the article "Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting." Professional job recruiters are starting to lean towards social networking technology to hunt for potential job candidates. A very popular site includes LinkedIn, which contains a network of eight million professionals all over the globe. The benefit of this to society is that there are more options for job applicants. Rather than the traditional apply in person or to the company online, you can post your resume on Indeed for instance, and recruiters may directly contact you for job openings if they are interested. The potential "dark side" is that even though recruiters can quickly find many job applicants online, it is still better to speak to them on the phone or in person, in order to develop a relationship with them and get to know them better.

These technologies might evolve in the future by being an increasing help to the police force. The police can monitor Facebook accounts to spot any suspicious activities and see the personality of the suspect (whether they are very aggressive and unstable). Regarding LinkedIn, it may evolve in the future by having interviews online via webcam. Therefore we do not actually have to meet face to face. For instance, if you are in New York but would like to relocate to California to find a job, you can schedule a video interview rather than going all the way to California to interview.

  1. Our country's government is quite invasive already as it is. It's such a scary thought to see that our own social media, which we tend to have most control of, can be used against us. We already have the luxury of CCTVs and the intensive monitoring of our online activities, but just like technology advances, I wonder how much more advance and invasive can our technology get. LinkedIn is great. Adding that video-conference feature would create more convenience for users, as applying to jobs and attending interviews would be so much more easier for us.

    1. Hello Rahiq,

I completely agree with you that our own social media can be used against us. As technology grows more advanced, identity theft on the internet will become more susceptible to everyone. Perhaps sometimes we need to take a step back from social media and our cell phones, and try to not be so dependent on it.
